Action description

Packaging is an extremely dynamic sector, in which solutions have to adapt to continuously changing markets in order to meet new customers' needs. Pandemic has further increased the speed of change and created new trends, that have reshaped this industry.
Like in other sectors, many challenges have emerged. These have paved the way for new approaches, based on the combination between multiple factors. The main are: sustainability, new consumption channels and innovation.

Sustainability keep playing a key role: all SMI solutions fully comply with this model. This is achieved both by processing recyclable materials (two examples are stretch-blow moulders manufacturing rPET bottles and shrink wrappers processing 100 % recyclable film) and by supplying solutions standing out for considerable energy saving (an example is represented by stretch film packers from the SFP ERGON range that are not equipped with a shrink tunnel).

The main change in consumption channels involves the substantial increase in e-commerce; this new preference has obviously a strong impact on packaging: as boxes need to be stacked during shipment, they have to be resistant, feature top-loading properties and preserve the product integrity. These characteristics are typical of RSC boxes, that can be manufactured by the latest solution developed by SMI: ACP pick & place case packers.

The third aspect is increased digitalization, that leads to a close integration between innovation and technology in packaging solution. These are reflected both in products, thanks to the use of equipment aimed at increasing efficiency and ensuring flexibility, and services designed to provide customers with quick support by using smart devices. The latest tool that was developed in this direction is represented by AR smart glasses giving customers audiovisual assistance.

In the talk we will go into detail of each single aspect and present the new products SMI has developed to meet these needs and to fully comply with the new “smart & green” paradigm.
