About us

Hop Growers Association of Slovenia organises expert consultations and meetings of members, participates in fairs and represents Slovenian hop industry in the world, organises various promotion events and preserves cultural heritage. We are a member of the International Hop Growers' Convention IHGC - IHB - CICH. With its members, the Association has strived to promote production standards, improve product quality and develop product quality with a protected geographical indication of "Stajerski hmelj" (STYRIAN HOPS). We succeeded in 2014 and got the certificate confirming that Association meets the requirements of the Specification for "Stajerski hmelj", registered at the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment of the Republic Slovenia. The certificate is issued in accordance with the standard SIST EN 45011 and in accordance with the procedure SPA07. The certificate is annexed to the list of all hop growers of Slovenia that gave joined the PGI of "Stajerski hmelj". The Association carries out internal control of PGI, and on this basis, all hop growers received a certificate on the quality of hops in the years from 2015.
The name STYRIAN HOPS is designated to the high quality hops produced in Slovenia, from own Slovenian varieties. The name originated from 19th century, when the first hops were produced in Slovenian Styria. The first Slovenian noble, fine aroma variety named Savinjski golding carried out the world fame od Styrian hops worldwide what will last for next generations as well. In the last decades of 20th century the varieties Aurora, Bobek, and Celeia were released which are covering the majority of the Slovenian hop growing area. In the last years, Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing followed new trends in the brewing industry and new protected varieties were released. Till now the most established new varieties are Styrian Gold and Styrian Wolf, following by the others presented in hop variety catalogues.
