Action description

Part 1: Brewhouse technology, 12:00 - 12:30pm

Dr. Roland Pahl - The lautering process in the area of conflict between technical/technological and economic efficiency: The lautering process in the brewhouse is a quality and time critical process step. In addition to established technologies such as lauter tun and mash filter, new processes have recently been added which partly challenge established doctrines. The speaker will describe the fundamentals of lautering, the complex interactions between the relevant parameters and their influence on the quality and efficiency of the overall process.

Dr. Roland Pahl is a trained, studied and doctoral brewer. Born in Berlin, he has been working at the VLB Berlin since 2002 and heads the VLB Research Institute for Beer and Beverage Production (FIBGP).

Part 2: Filling technology / product safety, 12:30 – 13:00pm

Dr. Georg Wenk - 10 years VLB performance record for empty bottle inspection machines - a balance!: Risk management - minimizing the probability of contamination for glass splinters in bottles: Glass and plastic splinters in bottled drinks and food are still the most common cause of cost-intensive and image-damaging recall campaigns. In the meantime, state-of-the-art inspection technology is available in the filling area to detect foreign objects in the container.

In the first part, the speaker reports from his long practical experience in the acceptance and inspection of empty bottle inspection machines and points out frequent sources of error.

The second part of the presentation will focus on how the scattering of glass splinters by bursting bottles can be minimized in the filling area. Investigations with high-speed cameras will show the amazing distances individual glass splinters can travel in a bottle filler. It is shown how these product risks can be effectively reduced.

Dr. Georg Wenk has a degree and doctorate in brewery engineering. He has been working at the VLB Berlin since 2005 and is in charge of the filling and packaging technology department at the Research Institute for Beer and Beverage Production.
